What Makes Variable Speed Drive Belts Different

A variable speed drive belt has to do two jobs at once: grip the sheave faces under load and flex enough to change its running diameter on the fly. That's why these belts share a distinct construction:

  • Wide top width: Gives the belt a large speed range as it moves through the adjustable sheave
  • Cogged (notched) underside: Allows a wide belt to bend around small diameters without cracking
  • Rigid cross-section: Resists dishing and distortion as the sheave faces squeeze the belt
  • High-strength tension cords: Hold up to the constant flexing that variator drives demand

Because of that squeeze-and-flex duty cycle, variable speed drive belts wear differently than standard v-belts. Slipping speed control, a narrowing top surface, or cracked cogs are all signs it's time for a replacement.

How to Read Your Belt Number

If you're replacing a worn belt, variable speed part numbers are easier to decode than they look. Take 1930V485 as an example:

  1. First two digits (19) – top width in sixteenths of an inch, so 19/16" or about 1.19" wide
  2. Next two digits (30) – the sheave groove angle in degrees
  3. Digits after the V (485) – pitch length in tenths of an inch, so 48.5"
